Terms of Service — Patchwork

1. The service

Patchwork is a GitHub App. On a schedule, it compares the dependencies declared in the repositories you install it on against public package registries. When a watched dependency has published a new major version, Patchwork clones the repository, locates the call sites affected by that version's breaking changes, rewrites them, runs your project's own build or type-check, and opens a pull request describing what changed.

By installing the App or using patchwork.co.in, you agree to these terms. If you install it on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you are authorised to do so.

2. What Patchwork will never do

These are product guarantees, not just policy. They are enforced by how the pipeline is built:

It will not commit to your default branch. Every change lands on an isolated patchwork/* branch.
It will not merge anything. Patchwork opens pull requests. A human merges them.
It will not claim a change works when it does not. If verification fails, the pull request opens as a draft marked [needs review].
It will not touch repositories you did not select during installation.

3. Intended use and limitations

Patchwork is intended for dependency-migration changes in TypeScript, JavaScript and Python projects. It is not a general-purpose code generator, a security scanner, or a substitute for your test suite.

You should understand these limitations before relying on it:

Machine-generated code requires review. The rewrites are produced by a large language model guided by static analysis. A pull request that compiles is not proof that behaviour is unchanged.
Compiling is not the same as correct. Verification runs your build or type-check. If your project has thin type coverage or no build step, that signal is correspondingly weak, and Patchwork labels such runs rather than claiming success.
Migration knowledge can be incomplete or stale. Coverage depends on the migration guides and type differences available for a given package version. A migration may address only part of a breaking change.
Semantic changes may be missed. Renamed symbols are detected reliably; changes in runtime behaviour that leave the call signature intact may not be.

You are responsible for reviewing every pull request before merging it. Do not merge a Patchwork PR into production without the review you would give a colleague's.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

install Patchwork on repositories you do not own or lack permission to modify;
use it to introduce code you know to be malicious, infringing, or unlawful;
attempt to extract our prompts, models, or infrastructure credentials, or to probe the service beyond ordinary use;
deliberately overload the service — for example by installing it across repositories solely to consume capacity;
resell or rebrand the service without a written agreement.

We may suspend an installation that breaches this section, or that threatens the stability of the service for others.

5. Your code and your rights

You keep all rights to your source code. We claim no ownership of your repositories, of the pull requests Patchwork opens, or of the code within them — the changes are proposed to you as your code, under your repository's own licence.

We do not use your code to train models. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what is transmitted and what is retained.

6. Beta status and availability

Patchwork is in public beta. It is provided without a service-level agreement. Sweeps may be delayed, skipped, or re-run; features may change; and we may introduce limits on usage as we learn what the infrastructure costs. We will give at least 30 days' notice before charging for a plan that is currently free.

7. Disclaimer of warranties

The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, that any migration will be complete or correct, or that a verified pull request is free of defects.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Patchwork will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of the service — including from merging a pull request it opened.

Our total aggregate liability is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim, or one hundred US dollars. While the service is free, that limit is one hundred US dollars.

9. Termination

You may stop using Patchwork at any time by uninstalling the GitHub App, which revokes our access immediately. We may suspend or terminate an installation for breach of these terms, or discontinue the service with reasonable notice. Pull requests already opened remain in your repository and are yours to merge or close.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date above will change, and material changes affecting existing installations will be announced before taking effect. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the revised terms.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of India have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
